What is the best sound card for my computer?

I tried plugging a microphone and no sounds would come out. I check on the properties but still nothing happens. I also have a plan of plugging a guitar or other audio devices. But with this problem I can't go on with my plan. My last recourse might be buying a new sound card. My computer right now has an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ 2.5GHz, 2GB RAM Memory (1.75 GB usable) and 32-bit operating system. Please give me the best advice. Thanks.

Click the volume icon next to your time in the bottom right corner of your screen. Make sure nothing is muted or turned way down. Other than that, I love XFI Soundblaster Xtreme , great card for gaming or otherwise.

You don't need a new sound card, you need an audio interface.

They've got PCI cards with instrument inputs, but a USB or Firewire interface is really what you're looking for.
