Thoughts on a Suzuki DR125?

Ive been wanting a thumper, and only to spend about $1000. Ive been looking awhile and the best Ive found was a XL600 that I couldnt kickstart to save my life. But it was FUN!!! Still I decided I want electric start.

I want to use the bike on the land I live on to play, and to take trail riding, but towed to the trail. It would also be good to take it to national forest and so forth. Being street legal is important. Im 5'10" and 200lbs and rode dirt a bit as kid but not competitively. I know just enough to get myself in trouble. Id like to be able to wheelie easily. This bike would be added to a stable including a KZ1100 and CBR1100XX and a sporting twin once I sell the hurricane. So it wont be primary transportaiton by any means.

I found a 95 Suzuki DR125 for 700. Would this bike fit my needs? I like to go fast, and Im afraid this wont cut it.

The 125 is probably not enough bike, although it could be amusing enough on tight trails. I have a couple of DR350s, which I like a lot even though they are far from state-of-the-art. The DR30SE is the one you want, street legal with electric start. I'm not sure if the electric start became available in '95 or '96. Finding one under $1000 will not be easy, but you ought to be able to get one for not too much more.

The DR125 is a bit small if you're able to handle the KZ and CBR (both nice, got to love a black bird!).

It is a solid bike but probably not going to suit you with respect to size or speed (definitely not speed). I have a drz400s, paid 1500 for it. (craigs list in Orlando) If you could scrape up a little more, you could certainly find a lot more bike. The street legal part is a killer for you as well as there are few that meet that criteria especially in your price range.

If you are small and size isn't an issue, remember that speed is relative. The bike might go 60 but 20 might be screaming on the trail...I find that more times than not, I'm in second gear riding through trails and only get to open it up every once in a while on a straight....

The 125 will not be powerful enough for you. Look for at least a 250, or buy the 600 and just practice starting it until you get it right.

Have a look at some KTM enduro bikes, they range from 50cc to 650cc.
