question for nursing mommies?

how long did it take to get your period back?
I read on babycenter that it can take a year for women who nurse!! Is there anyone out there that have been that blessed??

Just curious! :)

wow! I got mine back with my son at 4 months and now my daughter is 4 1/2 months with no sign of it coming, so you are giving me hope that it won't come back for a while! :)

It all depends on how often you nurse and of course how your individual body does things. Breastfeeding releases a hormone called Prolactin. Which suppresses Estrogen and that in turn stops ovulation(the release of a mature egg).

The more often you nurse. The more Prolactin is released. That keeps your estrogen levels low. Thus preventing your body from ovulating. For some mom's this works well. And they don't get their period back for a number of months, even over a year. Other mom's can get them back within a few weeks.

The key to this is to nurse as often as you can,and as baby needs.

I have had to do mixed feedings(formula and nursing) but with my first son I nursed him(mostly for comfort, not so much for food) till he was 7 months and it took another 3 months after that for my period to start up again.. with my 2nd son(who at the start I nursed a lot more then my first but then ended up being more for comfort again till 6 months) I got my period at the 6 week mark and had one every two weeks until I got pregnant again when he was 11 months old. This time I have been nursing a lot more (by far the most but we have had to add formula because my daughter has been having trouble gaining weight) and we are 3 months out and still on sign of my period. So I guess it is different for every woman and also for every baby.

With my first i got mine back at 9 months. I suspect it could have been longer if i had not been working which mean si likely would have been nursing more. My second baby i sonly 8 weeks ola dn no return so we'll see

I didn't get my period back until a month after I stopped breastfeeding so with my youngest that meant I didn't get my period back for 14 months after he was born.

I wish I was one of those women, I got my period back exactly 6 weeks after both babies.
