Why does it seem like whenever there is a debate about the term African American, every White person...?

...conveniently knows some South African who considers themselves African American?

I've never heard that happen before, but I don't get out much. However, unless they are being purposely rude or patronizing, please try to give them some understanding. Being white isn't easy sometimes since many are always trying to separate ourselves from the whole discrimination thing. Some are just more eager to prove themselves "non-racist" than others and end up putting their foot in their mouth as a result. I don't think it's meant to be malicious...it just turns out to be a bit naive or ignorant, I believe.

Hope that helps.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Again, I honestly do not know why so many ppl care about what somebody wants to call themselves. I think they are referring to charlize theron, who is from south africa and now lives in the U.S.
