Which camera should i choose (DSLR camera for me and a Bridge camera for my family)?

Hello
I need your opinion to choose one DSLR camera for me and the bridge one for my wife and kids.
DSLR camera : Nikon D5000 or Pentax k-r.
Bridge camera : Nikon P100 or Panasonic FZ100.
Thanks.

DSLR camera: The k-r will most likely have better technical image quality than the D5000, but it lacks lens choices. If one day you become serious about photography, you'll find that you have a limited range of lenses to choose from. The Nikon D5000 isn't as good technically, but it's "system" is a lot more flexible, with more lenses and accessories to choose from. It really all depends on your needs.

Bridge camera: Given that Panasonic has been pumping out great point-and-shoots for the past few years, I'd choose the Panasonic for sure. Nikon isn't bad either, but their point-and-shoots aren't up to par with the very best in its class. If you don't need the ridiculous zoom range, I'll also take a look at the Canon G12, Canon S95, and Panasonic LX5.

Currys are desparate to clear some stock I think! Get in there quick before they all sell!!! The price for #1 and #2 is a bargain! Even without the cashback that I just noticed. BEWARE #3 and #4 are body only - a lens will cost you extra - and yes! you do need one! #5 with the £50 cash back offer is also a real bargain. In order of preference #2, #5, #1 - (ignore #3 and #4 as they don't include a lens) No DSLR's use AA batteries unless you buy a supplementary battery grip. Because they are not running power hungry zoom motors the battery in a DSLR will last a loooooong time. My 450D is very similar to the 1100D and a battery lasts for 500+ shots. Stop twiddling your thumbs and grab a bargain cos at that price they ain't gonna last long!

Nikon makes excellent cameras I'm told, I don't use them. I prefer Canon and would recommend the
Rebel XS or the t1i. The t1i does HD video. I recommend these two because I own both and I know
the kind of technical quality they can deliver.

Lots of people seem hyped on Pentax these days but I don't trust them. Call me cynical but I don't.

Bridge. Well Panasonic, while making many fine products, isn't a "real" camera company... this is just a sideline. I would choose a Canon, Nikon or Fuji for your bridge

I made this mistake a few years back. I got myself a dSLR. I got my youngest son a digicam, my eldest a Kodak bridge and my wife a Sony point-and-shoot. They all complained about the picture quality they got compared to what I was getting so to solve everything once and for all, I bought each of them a secondhand dSLR last summer. Now I get pestered with questions on how to do this and how to do that and when together we look like a bunch of papparazis.
