How do "they" conduct background checks?

Like on employment applications, when that ask if you've ever been convicted of a misdemeanor or were in the millitary how do they verify if you say no? How do they check to really see if you have a degree? I know how to get a credit report, but thats all I know how to do with a SSN.

P.S. Im not trying to fool an employer, or steal anyones identity or anything sinister, Im just curious.

they mostly contact you previous school and work places to know how well you were behaved and how you interacted with other people, they can also contact you doctor to see if you have any brain in-balances like bipolar disorder, anger management problems, or others like cancer or anything else that could hurt your work performance.
