It explains how igneous rocks fractionate as a result of partial melting of an original basaltic source. It results, initially, in rocks becoming increasingly DEPLETED in magnesium & iron. The rocks then becoming increasingly DEPLETED in calcium &, as a consequence, become ENRICHED in sodium, potassium and silica (felsic minerals).

This fractionation is partly due to the lesser density of felsic minerals & partly because they remain in water saturated melts at lower temperatures.
