What is wrong with my black mystery snail?

I have a very big black mystery snail. I have had her for quite some time. When ever I get to close to her she retreats back into her shell which is expected that's why she has a shell. A little bit ago though she was waving her siphon all over while she was at the surface of the water. I thought nothing of it except oh she is having her a nice breathing break. I went back in a few minutes ago and she was still there after 45 minutes. I put my hand in the water near her to make sure she was ok but she never retreated into her shell. I picked her from the side of the tank and she still didn't go back into her shell. I put her into an empty spare 5.5 gallon tank I have but only gave her about 1 gallon of water. She climbed the side again and is just sitting there. When I was holding her I poked her softly to see if she was dead and her muscles and stuff moved but she still didn't hide.
What is wrong with my snail?

Oh and she had some gooey stuff around her. I thought maybe she was laying eggs but she is the only snail in the tank and has been the only tank since I bought her about 6 months ago. Well she had babies when I first brought her home and I didn't even know it until I cleaned my filter and found all the dead babies.

Eryn V black mystery snails do need mates to breed. They are a breed of snail that do not change gender.

I checked my tank and everything is at what range it should be.

Do you have other snails? She could have possibly been trying to lay eggs. But if she's not going back in her shell, maybe she's hurt. Make sure you check all your ammonia levels and stuff, she might be needing to go for air because the water is toxic to her. Try not to poke or move tanks as much so you don't stress her out. :)

Eryn V: "mystery/apple/inca" snails have genders, silly!

Slime coat-ish stuff might be a sign she's sick. I would suggest taking her to a vet, but unfortunately people don't see snails as worthy-enough life-forms for medical care, and I haven't been able to find anyone specializing in aquatic invertebrates... x/ You could try putting some medicine drops in the water that are just a general fix like the dechlorinator/medicine "Prime" which kinda helps against stuff like ick. Best of luck! :)

your snail could be laying eggs. snails dont have genders, so they dont need a mate to reproduce
