What´s a program I can download to chat with my msn contacts?

Windows Live Messenger failed and I can´t reinstall so now I need a new program. I read somewhere about a progam that lets you chat with your contacts that use MSN and gmail, but I don´t remember where and what it was called, but really I just want any program... that´s free for download! :)

This type of program is called an 'IM multi-purpose client'. I like pidgin personally. free to download. lightweight.
