I work at a convenience store and four or five black people come in preaching the word of god to me a night. A white person may come in once a week or even longer in between. And on top of that the black people are more zealous. What's up with this?

White people know religion is a bunch of crock and that it was used to conquer other people. They smirk when they see black people promoting the religion that made them into slavery in the first place

The church is still important in a lot of black communities; The work of Martain Luther King, and many Christians on the civil rights issues seems to have made a lasting impact on the black community.

First, of all, black people are not "typically" more religious than white people, you probably just work in an area with a higher percentage of religiously evangelical black folks. ANYWAYS, we are more religious because of slavery. When we were enslaved, it was all that kept us sane. And since then, it has been imbued into our upbringing, so many American blacks consider themselves Christian. It's in their upbringing, and since then, they've probably been thrust into situations that CAUSED them to call on the name of Jesus (such as rape, murders, jail, etc.), while the white people in your area probably grew up in a more privileged society, and they practice religion as a duty, not a thing they HONESTLY feel they need or want.
Now, that's not saying that white people are LESS religious than black folks, because that's not true (take a trip to the projects, and you'll see they don't act very Christ-like at all...), but if they ARE, it's because they (including myself) feel they have good reason.

Religion tends to be more popular amongst poorer people. As far as i know, blacks tend to have lower living standards than white. Probably because of old racism and social gaps still remaining.
Very poor countries tend to have a high number of theists, while richer and more successful countries tend to have a higher amount of non-believers.
The scandinavian countries have a atheist percentage of about 90%, and most of them are at the top 10 of "greatest nations in the world".

Blacks during slavery turned to GOD for help and they sung songs about GOD/religion that was also code for how to escape in order for most to know these codes you had to attend service where most will teach you what the song meant and where you had to go.
