On the thermostat in my office is a little stick-figure icon of a man standing inside a house. Next to it is a button which, when pushed, turns a little led light on or off. What the heck does this button do??
I am in an office building. Whether the button is pushed or not my office seems to maintain temperature.

It's an icon that represents whether or not the space is "occupied". Your HVAC system is controlled by a computer located remotely from your office area. It is programed to heat and cool your space to a preset temp only during the "occupied" times of the day. At a preset time, the computer turns the temp up or down due to the space being "unoccupied" to save energy. Pushing this icon (button) overrides this function and allows you to work late in the evening in comfort.

As OP said, even if I manually increase the temperature on the thermostat, nothing happens. The office maintains whatever temperature it is set at remotely. Is there a way to override this?

If the thermostat controls a heat pump, the button probably turns on the resistance heating coils. It will also come on when it's very cold outside and the heat pump can no longer operate efficiently.
