Lazy chihuahua with active Akita. Playtime and general habits questions...?
My husband and I rescued an Akita mix (Jasmine) few months ago - she's now 14mos old. A month ago, my sister-in-law moved in with us and brought her 2 year old chi (Thor). After a week, Jasmine was used to Thor and was ready to play. But Thor has never gotten used to Jasmine.
A couple weeks ago I asked a question about their playing - she pokes and prods him with her nose and he bites her lip and lunges at her, and backs himself into a corner. She'll lift a paw to him, and not touch him and he'll bark/yelp. Is he scared? Trying to get her in trouble? Just talking?
She also watches him every time he moves - which is very rare. He'll move from his cage to the couch and back to his cage - it's about 5 feet. He'll run to the kitchen if he thinks he'll get a treat. If he moves out of her sight, she chases him to see where he's going (that's a bit troubling as it's almost a giant bound, regardless of what-else she was doing). Is she trying to initiate play? She'll play anytime - wake her up at 3am with a squeaky toy and she'll chase it. Or is she being dominant? I can't seem to get her to leave him alone (even if that's just not staring at him) when he's up and about for more then a few seconds.
When they do "play", she's so gentle with him considering her size and clumsiness. She rarely touches him and is very careful not to hurt him. the other day, they each had one end of a rope toy (Jasmine is always dropping her toys at Thor's feet - he never takes it without our convincing) but they each had one end, and Jasmine was tugging just enough to put up a fight for Thor, but not enough to even pull him off the couch. Good dog!
Thor is also very lazy - sleeping 20+ hours a day - regardless of what we're up to. Is this normal Chi behavior? Or should we be worried?
Any tips or suggestions on how to get him acclimated to her, or ideas on what to do about playtime, her watching his every move, or just anything at all is so appreciated. Thanks!
