Most "Ethical" Pet Store?

Question

Originally when I set out on a search for my next ferret, I was set against not purchasing from a pet store. But after finding the nearest ferret shelter to be four hours away and after exhausting Craigslist, it seems as if my only practical option is to buy one from a pet store.
   I know that no pet store has an immaculate record for humane treatment, but which chain tends to provide the *best* care to their animals (particularly ferrets)?  Within an hour, I believe we have a Petland, Petco, and Petsmart..There is also a "Complete Pet Mart" but I've already been there and the living conditions of their ferrets are unacceptable.

In my experience, Petsmart is the best and Petland is the worst. Petsmart (at least my local) usually has 1 or two of each animal at a time and is picky in adopting. Petland is crowded and full of disease and couldn't care less where the animals go so long as they get money off them before they die in the store and become a loss. Petco is so-so depending on the store.

You can look on petfinder.com. Keep looking on craigslist. There are always people wanting to get rid of their ferrets. Do not buy from a pet store. You will probably get a sick, parasite infested, under socialized ferret. You will also be supporting mills and the cycle of abuse.

Are there any local, privately owned pet shops? Most often, they are your best bet when adoption isn't possible. They don't overwhelm themselves with too many live animals at once so it's almost like buying from a breeder or rescue.
