When snowboarding, what conditions are better?

I like it when there is a little fresh snow on top of packed down snow. I really don't like snowboarding when it's icy out on the slopes.

I'm new to the sport and was given a 5150 Stroke 163 wide board. I seemed to do much better when there is fresh powder down.

What is your opinion?

in my opinion there is nothing better the shredding after a good amount of fluffy power falls. i ride a burton custom set up and i prefer to ride freestyle and a light to moderate power is always awesome. my least favorite conditions are icy and slushy. when its too icy im not able to pull off all of my normal tricks and when its slushy its like fighting the slope down and since your new at it, its also a bit more physically challenging when its either icy or slushy. i know u didnt ask but i have a few quick pointers if your just starting off... Knee pads are a god-send. the more protected you are the harder tricks you can try and practicing speed is also more comfortable. i never wore a helmet until i got air but alot of people wear them and also wrist guards too. also try to keep your board well waxed. you dont have to do it after every ride but every 2 or 3 times on the slopes you should rewax. this will making riding way easier and more fluid. not to mention that it has a pretty serious impact on the control of the board. waterproof clothes are essential and just remember that every time you go to the slopes that the first ride down is almost most challenging. never get discouraged and if you cant pull off a trick just keep at it. good luck and i hope you really grow to love snowboarding. its so right on. hope i helped :)

163? You must be tall son. I live in New York and ride in New Jersey and it's usually very icy, it sucks. Fresh snow is nice, but after a snowstorm it's usually too slow for me and it's harder to hit jumps. I like it a few days after a storm so theres no ice, the snow is packed, and it's still a little nice and powdery

Well it honestly depends on your preference, how well your board is sharpened and waxed, and where you live. I live in New York, and usually the slopes are kinda icy with a little packed down snow and maybe a little fresh snow on top. My favorite would probably also be yours, but it all depends on what you like.

And nice board (:

All snow conditions are great, you just need to learn how to handle each one. Hard pack and ice are unbeatable for acceleration and high speed - that's where your 163cm board will excel. Sure, pow is easier to handle and is forgiving on wipeouts, but it just doesn't give you a ton of speed unless you're in Utah and going down a steep drop. Spring slush is good too - it's not quite pow, but it allows for a decent grip and makes moguls easy to navigate at higher speeds. South of NY you sort of have to learn to enjoy whatever mother nature throws your way, ice, snow, or rain. Three cheers for Ice Coast!

I don't who prefers to have board ruining, slippery, painful ice over white fluffy fun pow pow. I unfortunately live on the east coast where all you can expect is ice but i was out in park city and got 3 feet of the good stuff. Best experience of my life.
