You have to know where to place a comma--and why. You must know when to capitalize--and why. You need to know parts of speech, have perfect grammar--and know why--know when to start a new paragraph--and why--and on and on.

Everyone wants to do it. Everyone thinks they can. Most cannot and never will. And yes, I used to do this and made a lot of money doing it.

Publishers employ proofreaders, yes, but it's an extremely difficult job to get into if you don't have any relevant experience. It's not something people just go into from scratch. You also need to learn proper proofreading 'marks' in order to mark the mistakes in a manuscript.

Proofreading novels is a very sought-after job and there are millions of people wanting to do it. Proofreaders for technical documents and manuals, on the other hand, are harder to find, so if you have a technical specialism of any kind, that would be an advantage.
