Alright, I'm not the most avid J-pop listener, but I do know some artists. I shall try my best to give you some good artists/groups to listen to. :] I hope I helped!
Utada Hikaru
If you haven't listened to her yet, I would be surprised. But here are some songs I highly recommend.
-Apples and Cinnamon
-Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (FYI)
-HEART STATION
SAKANACTION
They're more of a J-pop rock band, but they're songs are quite catchy.
-Native Dancer
-Mikazuki Sunset
Buono
If you're into cute girl groups, this one is good for you! This trio is extremely cuuute.
-Renai Rider
Kaela Kimura
You can never go wrong with Kaela Kimura! Her music is so bright and happy.
-Happiness!!
-Jasper
BoA
Although she's Korean, she's quite famous in Japan and sings some English and Japanese songs. She's been called the good girl version of Britney Spears.
-Obsessed
-I Did It For Love
-Eat You Up
-Shine We Are!
Chieko Kawabe
Another cutie pie! Kinda similar to Hilary Duff as some people say.
-Sakura Kiss
-Be Your Girl
KAT-TUN
More of a boys group, but you can never get enough of boy groups! They're fairly talented.
-1582
-ONE ON ONE
-SIX SENSES
-12 o' Clock
HALCALI
-SISTER SHIP
-Tips Taps
FLOW
-Days
-Steppers High
Hitomi Takahashi
This girl has the prettiest eyes ever. She has a great voice as well.
-Bokutachi no Yukue
-Skull

Vocaloid music is easy to find just type in the name + vocaloid into youtube. Also, Exit Tunes have had two top ranked albums sold on itunes. I'd look up Exit tunes albums on itunes if your into Vocaloid.
Beyond that, animes use top groups for their intros and outros and you can get an idea from the latest anime on some groups to choose from. Just listen to a anime intro you like, look up the intro song + who sang it, then look up the group and go from there.
Otherwise, someone who is well known like Gackt is also a start. Japanese music is quite varied although most are based on Eurobeat music.
Engine of Ruin
The best Japanese music is the noise/sludge/stoner stuff.
Start with Boris, and discover true magic.

GReeeN is a good J-pop band
