Need help with my 500 freestyle?

I just finished my conference championship as a sophomore in college. I swim division 3 as a distance specialist. I really want to get to 5:00.00 or as close as I can by this time next year.

Here are my splits for my best time, a 5:26. Any suggestions on what I can do to improve the quality and efficiency of my race? My 1000 time is an 11:19 and my 1650 time is an 18:54.

The thing is... I can pace 31s all day in practice with about 10 seconds of rest... I don't know why they get to the 33s. So you all are saying my 250-450 area is where I really need to clamp down?

I think that you could sprint it a little more. Because it seems like your 500 and 1000 pace is pretty close. My coach says that a 500 is mid-distance. Also, work realy hard in practice to get all those 33s to 31s. You don't have to take my opinion, i'm only 13 and i only go a 6:10. You should ask your coach.

The best thing you can do is build the 500. By the end of your race you should be at a full out sprint. The person counting for you should be paying attention to your splits and you should have different codes for when you are on pace or if you have to go faster

The middle is to big of a drop off
You can't back down you must keep it strong all the way through
Try faster underwater kicks off the wall and less strokes per length but getting farther with each stroke
Hope this helps!
