Do you think that teachers get paid enough? Why?

I'm asking for opinions. The average starting salary according to this website: http://teacherportal.com/teacher-salaries-by-state is about $30,000. It may actually be lower, I'm not entirely sure.
Keep in mind that teachers are educating the future leaders of America, and that they have to deal with kids who misbehave on a regular basis but their parents do nothing about it.
On the other hand, they do get all the major holidays off, and their technical work day is the amount of one school day. (However they do take papers and assignments home)
Do you think they should be paid more or less for what they do?

Consider that movie stars get millions for a couple of months work. Teachers have to have college degrees. The holidays they get off are usually spent in preparation or marking. They have to deal with disturbed kids, idiot tail-covering administrators and substance abusing parents. The latest trend is to blame teachers for lack of achievement and let the neglectful parents feel self-righteous because the schools aren't doing their job. Give me a break. I loved teaching, but I did NOT go into it for the money. I spent a lot of my own to bring supplies into the classroom that the district wouldn't pay for.

If you're looking to be a science teacher in a place where they're needed, you could probably be hired with a provisional license. That would mean you have a certain amount of time to finish coursework to be certified. However, if you are working in a place that really needs you, there's a decent chance they'll pay for it or at least help with the cost. I get paid reasonably well as far as teachers are concerned. I do not have any student loans to pay off, but I do have a bunch of other payments which I have no trouble paying each month. I would say education has a pretty low ceiling on how much you eventually get paid. It doesn't go up a whole lot with years of experience. It's a little bit each year, plus cost of living increase. Last year was my 2nd year of teaching and I was making about $34,000. A colleague of mine was finishing her 40th year of teaching and making something in the mid-fifties I think. So for the difference in years teaching, she really didn't make a whole lot more than me. The only real way to make pretty good money in education is to get a masters in administration or something like that which will move you up the ladder, so to speak. However, I don't think I would consider administration worth it just for the money. It seems like a much more difficult and unpleasant job than teaching. Even though the pay isn't great if you are thinking of becoming a science teacher I would highly recommend it. There is a lack of good science teachers out there, and it's really important that kids learn to love science. It will never happen, though, without a decent teacher to get them interested in it. Good luck with your decision. Hope any of this helped.

Since when is getting all the major holidays off a reason to pay someone less? Other than those who work in emergency services in retail, so does everyone else! On the other hand, while teachers may be educating the future leaders, they are also educating far more future followers, so that certainly isn't a reason to pay them more.

Basically, teachers should be paid more because they are paid less than just about everyone else with the same amount of education.

We all know the answer. But we can't afford to pay them what they are worth. But what we can afford is to pay Kobe Bryant 30 million per year to play basketball. I do not blame government for this inequity. Parents (taxpayers) are the ones who choose to have it this way.

But you know, with the movement to get rid of teacher unions to fire "bad teachers" it actually might get better for teachers. Can you imagine having all those poor performing teachers fired and the good teachers being a scarce commodity??? Wow...they will be able to open charter schools and charge what they are worth!!! where else will parents be able to send their children?? nowhere, because bad teachers no longer exist.

I know this is very extreme, but it could happen to a degree.

No, the same reason U said. " that they have to deal with kids who misbehave on a regular basis but their parents do nothing about it."
