I reset my Linksys wireless router and got internet access?

It does not require a password anymore. Do I really need to set a password?

I got it from a friend. I reset it because I didn't have the password. It works. However, it is an unsecured connection. I'm wondering why I just can't leave it that way. What are the hazards? Do I care, if someone is close enough to use my internet connection?

If you don't set up a password and some form of encryption, you may find others stealing your bandwidth and hacking your PC.
If you have no nearby neighbors you may get away with this, but you're better off with some security.

yes you need to set a password because if you doesn't put the password in router, it's unsecured and every one can use the internet. You will feel very slow ..

if you reset it then it become like out of the box, You need to configure typing on the browser 192.168.1.1 and username admin and the password is password. Then configure for your router. That is it.

Just go the configuration and then choose wireless tab then make security on your wireless WPA2 PSK and use alphanumeric keys for strong security.
