What should I bathe my horse with?

Okay so I want to bath my horse tomorrow. So lots of people on threads say people shampoo is ok? I have some "Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo" laying around and I would like to use that but do I need shampoo AND conditioner? Or just bathe him with shampoo? Or just conditioner? Or like conditioner on his tail only, or... Haha so if you know what I am talking about please give me insight. Thanks Tons!

ReadytoRun: Okay so like scrub him with Shampoo then rinse him then conditioner?

Everyone: So like its supposed to be 67 tomorrow, is that too cold? I think not, but I really don't know. And I get a bucket, fill it with water then pour the soap in, or just put the soap directly on him? Oh I have some puppy shampoo for my pug and is that okay to use on my horse also?

I have used both shampoo for people and horses and I haven't noticed a difference between the two. They both work perfectly fine for my horse. I usually get a bucket and put the shampoo in the bucket and sponge it onto my horse however you can also put it directly on the horse. I then put shampoo in his mane and tail as well if they are dirty. I would recommend washing the shampoo off (make sure you get all of it!) then start the whole process over with conditioner (mane and tail optional again).

I also try to avoid putting shampoo and conditioner on his face just to be sure it doesn't get in his eyes, to wash his face I just get a clean, wet sponge and sponge off his face. And you should be fine with the temp. Just make sure you get as much water off of him as possible when you finish so he will dry pretty quickly! have fun :)

If you even go to CVS you can buy mane and tail shampoo. Odd I know right that they would sell that at a drug store, and it is for horses, but can be used on people. They have it in shampoo in conditioner. Also if you are washing the horses body you can use PLAIN dawn dish soap, or any type of dish soap really as long as it doesn't have all the add on stuff to clean your dishes. Some people don't like the dish soap thing but I think it works fine as long as you don't use it on the horses face because it gets VERY sudsy!

Yes people shampoo is fine. Use a dilute solution of shampoo in water, rinse very well, scrape dry and put on a conditioning spray like eqyss or a leave in light conditioner. I like to use a shampoo bottle to premix the shampoo with quite abit of water. This makes putting on the shampoo evenly much easier and a thorough rinse is easier to achieve. Pre wet one side of horse, scrub that side, rinse most of the way. Wet other side, scrub that side rinse. Do mane and tail. Rinse all again. Do the face very last and with only water and lightly brush water around. About 1/8 bottle of shampoo and fill the rest with water does one horse. I like to use a brush to brush it through, scrub and move it around. The horse comes out squeeky clean! Be sure to rinse very well, scrape them dry and put on a cooler. I'm jealous! I wont' be able to bathe my horses for months yet.

Give him a good scrub down with the shampoo. I like to do it twice for affect but that is just me. Some people will use the conditioner to soften them and it wouldn't hurt to put a small amountand massage it into the coat but I would just stick with putting it in his mane and tail after you use the shampoo on his mane and tail. If you leave a bit of conditioner in the mane and tail, it will be soft and easily detangible.

I use shampoo only every few washouts, as you don't want to dry your horse's skin too much by stripping the natural oils. I usually use cheap people shampoo. If you want to be really economical, a big container of orvus will last forever, as it is very concentrated, but it works well....it was originally made for carpets! For the mane and tail, I keep them shiny and conditioned by using cowboy magic detangling gel...it is awesome
