What would happen if radioactive particles leaked into he environment ?

What would happen to all the people, animals, plants and soil if the radioactive particles where released into the environment?

How long would the area be safe? Or would it always be contaminated?

it would take hundred or thousands (or longer) of years for a radioactive particle to decompose or become inactive in the sediment, but it depends on what the elemental parts are. Some side affects are cancerous tumors and birth defects aka gene mutation on people and animals. Some plants would be unable to grow in the contaminated soil, and if they can survive it would not be long as they themselves would be contaminated by ions picked up from the soil.

It would be a very horrible disaster. Most of the West Coast will be contaminated... chaos.
