Can you install 3" bullnose tile over an old oak floor bullnose trim piece?

We just installed an porcelain tile floor in our foyer. The foyer leads to a step down living room..
At the edge of the step is an 3-1/2 " oak bull nose trim piece that is now 3/16 of an inch lower than the tile. What can we use for that transition? Our 12 " tiles offers a 3" bullnose piece and we wonder if we can install that over the oak bullnose? Does that make sense - would it work?
Thanks!

Your grout joint between the tile and the bull nose will crack. Can you remove the oak nosing and put a filler under it to raise it a bit and then nail back down? Then put a piece of trim molding under it to cover the gap.

I think the previous answers have laid out the dilemma pretty well. Tile showers are tougher to install and maintain but usually more interesting while the one-piece is less maintenance. Only you can decide which route is better for you. One other idea I'd like to add to the debate is a one-piece with some accent tile along the edges. I've seen this done and while it's not the same as 100% tile it's certainly an improvement over a drab one-piece.
