WoW has been around longer so that means lots of players and content but it's getting old
Rift though is new so not as many players and not as big of a map to explore but it is new and you can tell in the game play
Which would you rather and why?

There is no reason not to choose WoW. Unless you have been playing WoW for a long time, getting bored of it, and want to try something new, you should pick WoW as your first MMO. It is simply the best MMO out there, bar none.
Have you played WoW before and is deciding on switching to Rift or are you simply trying to pick which one you want to play first?
WoW is old and uninteresting. Rift is the recent WoW. each and everything approximately Rift is greater suited then WoW or the comparable, maximum critically the invasions and the classification device. on a daily basis there are random invasions in Rift that turn complete zones into great scale battles. WoW would not have something like this, different than each and every so often holiday activities or pre-advance activities yet they're uncommon. PvP is precisely the comparable, yet WoW has an area device at a similar time as Rift has PvP rifts. They the two have battlegrounds and warfronts. Rift has a sprint benefit whether, simply by fact they have an entire zone dedicated to PvP. think of WoW's Alterac Valley battleground, yet thrice the dimensions and allowed an limitless quantity of gamers simply by fact that is an open zone. WoW's dropping further and extra gamers on a daily basis. that is old and on objective to die out a lot beforehand then Rift. Why could you prefer to purchase a pastime it truly is going to be unplayable quickly?
@Kraz Bravo on the CynicalBrit reference. You are my new favourite person on Yahoo! Answers. Btw, that vid is definetely the best source for info on this subject.
Anyways, my opinion is this (and I know Kraz will probably agree with me on this). RIFT is basically just a WoW clone. Now before I start getting flamed "oh, he said it was a WoW clone, he insulted RIFT! AGHHH!! *nerd rage*", let me just state that there is nothing wrong with being a clone of WoW. Some would say that WoW is a clone of other games, and they would be partially correct. WoW took ideas from a variety of other games and combined them into one game... while RIFT is about 80-90% WoW derived. Basically, what I'm getting at, is that since this is your first big MMO, the choice is really irrelevant. If you want the game that has the most content, then go with WoW. If you want the game that is more recent and up-to-date, then go with RIFT. The choice is entirely yours to make, and you should pick whichever one would interest you the most.
I have played both ... of course, I have played WoW a lot more. I played RIFT only during the beta.
My frank opinion is that RIFT has tried to create a WoW clone. I'm not alone in this, check out the video link the sources, where CynicalBrit reviews RIFT in detail. He's one of the most popular WoW podcasters so he know his staff.
WoW has a lot more content at this point and there's an incredible community on some RP (roleplaying) servers. Of course, keep in mind you need friends to play an MMO. It doesn't work well as a single player, I've tried it :)
wow is probably your best bet specially since its your first mmo there is more websites and research done for wow making it easier to find out about your toon and the world how to quest what to focus on and such plus wow has been going for 6years and is strong ive played all 6 years and still love it even though i don't always like everything blizzard does its still the most enjoyable game out there imo with rift being so new its hard to tell if its going to take off or fizzle hope this helps :)
