For the second night in a row, my 5 year old cable modem has trouble connecting. At night, it will stop working for a few minutes and then go back to normal. Mind you that my PC is also 5 years old. Is the problem with the PC, my modem, my ISP (Cox Comm.), or something else?

1. If you think ISP is a problem , please check with your neighbors who own same cable connection from cox.See if they are getting proper service from cox or not. If they have same problem as you it's ISP then. you can also check the cable coming from wall jack and going into your modem.
2.Resetting the modem for 30 sec (press the reset button at the back of it) and turning it off for two minutes after that will surely help you getting connectivity back. If you still can't, ask COX to replace it coz after all you are paying every month. Right!!!!!!!!!!!!
3.PC can be a problem if you think so. So try to connect your modem directly to any other desktop or laptop at your home and see how long you can get the connectivity for.
Do you just get online at night or just notice it at night? If its just happening at night my guess is your ISP is making some upgrades which they do at night and disconnect service for a couple minutes. I have comcast and they do it mostly around 1am - 3am and my modem will do the same as yours, the reason I know its them cause they also provide my cable tv and I lose signal to that aswell at the same time.
should be a problem with the modem only. just swap it out with a new one, will run much better if it`s 5 years old. And if need be, have the cable line re-ran from the box outside to where your outlet is in your house. extremely old and weathered cable lines will provide bad service, trust me :)
