Laptop memory dispute?

On the specs of every laptop i see two different measurements of the memory in two different categories.

It tells the space on the "hard drive" and just the plain memory. What is the difference between the two?, as the hard drive is usually 4-8 GB depending on the comp, and the "memory" is usually 400GB etc.

acutally you have them mixed up, the "400GB" part is the hard drive. and the "4-8GB" is memory

the hard drive can also be called storage and is non-volatile memory. basically when the power is cut the data will still be there but the transfer speeds are relatively slow.
while memory, also called RAM, is relatively fast and expensive. but it is volatile so without power, no data can be saved. so when you turn off your computer you flush the memory.

you need memory because it is fast and it is used during the execution of programs. but you need storage to keep information between reboots.
