Cat allergy = Dog allergy as well?

I'm allergic to cats. I never used to be but now I can't stay in the same room with a cat for more than 20 minutes. Are cat allergies different from dog allergies? I'm going to get a dog in a few months (hopefully :] ). I decided on a a pit-bull terrier so I was wondering if i would be allergic to dogs as well. If so, then I'll have to settle with a miniature schnauzer. Thanks in advance!

Many, but not all, people who are allergic to cats will be allergic to dogs and other furry critters as well. Please spend quite a bit of time (several days straight at least) with the breed of your choosing prior to getting one, or ask your doctor to test you for allergies. Do be aware that while some breeds are *better* for allergy sufferers than others, if you are very allergic to dogs, you will be allergic to ALL dogs, as it's not simply the hair and skin flakes that cause a reaction- it's also the proteins in saliva, urine, etc.

Dogs allergies and cat allergies are completely different, but that doesn't mean you might not be allergic to both.
For instance, any time I handle a cat I have to wash my hands immediately afterwords or the next time I touch my face I will severely irritate my eyes. If a cat scratches me, the scratch immediately welts up and gets super itchy.
If I handle a dog, then my reaction depends on the breed. Generally I become stuffed up, and with certain breeds my arms get slightly itchy. A dog scratch seems to have no real effect.

If you have any friends who own dogs, go play with them to see if you react. If you're buying from a breeder you can ask to interact with their dogs, so you'll know exactly whether or not the breed will cause a problem.

just because you have cat allergies, it doesn't mean you will have dog allergies. you should go to the allergist and get tested. you don't want to get a dog, and then have to give it up when you find out you're allergic. I'm allergic to dogs and mini schnauzers drive my allergies crazy. yorkies are supposed to be good for allergy sufferers too but I'm allergic to them. certain people may be allergic to different breeds.

They are both completely different. A dog will not make your allergies work up. However, just for the record, if you're allergic to cats, you're allergic to ferrets too.
