What is the name of a dark purple fruit that grows on a tree?

I want to know the proper name of a purple fruit that grows on a tree. When I was a little kid all the other kids would pick them from the tree and eat them. They would also be a bunch of them on the ground as they had fallen. Every one called them 'Monkey *****' but I know that is not the real name. They look and shape exactly like purple egg plants but smaller I'd say about 2 inches long. They taste sweet but bitter at the same time if that make any sense. Do you know the name of this fruit? Thank you!

Plum seems obvious from the question itself. However, they are much larger than two inches.

I wonder if you could be talking about muscadine grapes? They are larger than regular grapes and there are green/gold varieties and there are purple/black varieties. Muscadine grapes have a very thick skin and are sweet but also have a tang to them... they are probably smaller than two inches though.

Plums sound like that they are sweet but bitter tasting...
Other purple fruits are grapes, Blackberries, blueberries, Black currants.... But they're too small so you HAVE to be describing plums i guess

Plum. I can't read what is written after "Monkey", but I'm guessing it is "@asses". If so, then I'm fairly certain you mean a plum because they look like a butt. They have that indentation going down one side of them.
