Giving house key to HOA member?

I DO NOT want to do it.  He also is the onsite manager, and maintenance person.  He seems like a reasonable person.  I just moved in there, and a plumbing problem came up. He asked if I wanted to leave my key with him, so the plumber can have access to the unit, so I don't have to take time off of work.  I told him I misplaced the spare key (which is actually the truth) and that I would prefer to be there anyway, to find out what the problem is.  What is a polite way of telling him "No, I don't want to give you the key to my new home." ?? I know this is just business and I don't think he would take it personally, but I just don't want to be singled out and suffer consequences if he takes it the wrong way. Does anyone have prior experience with this?  Thanks!

If you don't want to, you don't have to. You will just have to drop things on the spot and run back to the home when they want to see it. If you continue not to do this and they cite it on paper, they can say that you refused entry and so work can't be done so YOU have to pay for it yourself.

You do know that your HOA fees COVER this on-site manager's salary and stuff, so you should be able to trust your home with them. My onsite caretaker had a set of keys to the home when they were doing HOA approved work on all the units, so they could come and go when they needed to. If anything gets broken or goes missing, you simply notify them and they're really good at replacing the item at cost or giving you the money for it (if you can show them proof of what it's worth in the store nowadays etc).

By denying them the key, you are making it difficult for them and more annoying for yourself. But you are entitled to do that.

Wow you are touchy worried about too much say No you don't feel comfortable with giving him a key you will make a different arrangement. Maybe you have a family member or close friend that can meet him when the repair is needed. I bet the guy also feels better about not being responsible for the key.
