Just installed new V&H pipes, chopping sound?

Question

I just put some Vance and Hines on my 96' Nighthawk 750. No, I didn't rejet YET, but will when I get some time to do it.

Anyway, install went fine, gaskets looked good, but when I started up it sounded choppy from the FRONT of the engine and I felt puffs of air coming from the second pipe (from the throttle side) where it connects to the block. I figured it was just misaligned, so I loosened it all up and readjusted. I retightened, but STILL had same issue. 

Did I do it wrong? Is it still misaligned or do I need new gaskets? Also, what's the rule of thumb for tightening the bolts? Hand tighten only, correct?

You should always use new gaskets.I don't know the specs for your bike but i'd bet money there is a torque spec for the exhaust manifold.If you don't have a manual call a Honda dealer and ask the service department for the torque on the bolts.

If it already sounds reliable why difficulty? except extra noise there is no upside to doing that. you may even shrink to rubble your exhaust lower back stress and make it run worse. i love the V&H slip ons, i imagine they sound reliable. in case you pick to flow louder without cutting up your exhaust equipment get a set of drag pipes meant for your bike.

you might need to get new gaskets. as far as tightening i have always got them handtight then about another half a turn.

you never re use the crush washer/gasket on an exhaust system!
