The veterinarian will probably feel it himself, and may recommend a fine needle aspirate of the lump to determine what kind of cells are in it. A fine needle aspirate involves inserting a needle into the lump and then drawing out some of the cells with a syringe, which will then be examined under the microscope. After microscopic examination of the cells, your veterinarian can tell you whether or not you need to worry about it, or if they think the lump needs to be removed. They can also tell you what changes to look for in the lump that would indicate it needed to be removed.

Our vet typically does a quick test with a needle to determine if the cyst if just fatty tissue or something else. Dogs can get fatty tumors called lipomas, which are normally benign. If the vet determines thats what it is, you can just leave it....unless it gets bigger over time.

Your Vet will want to biopsy first. If it's just a fatty tumor then there is nothing to worry about. Having it removed is pointless unless it is affecting you dogs movements, bothering your dog or has grown very large. Sometimes they will just go away on there own.
