Canon Lens Abreviation question?

What does the S designation stand for on Canon EF lenses? As in EF S. I know EF is the common Canon mount, but don't know what the difference is with the EF-S.

The S stands for Short back focus. EF-S lenses use the Canon EF mount, but the rear element of the lens is closer to the camera's image sensor. These lenses are designed to be used only on the Canon crop frame cameras. They can be mounted on a full frame Canon DSLR camera, but because the rear element of the lens is closer to the sensor, the larger mirror of the full frame camera will strike the rear element of the lens, damaging one or both part.

Actually the part about the motor in the camera on EF lenses is untrue. My source:

Same source - EF-S lenses

EF-S for APS-C sensor camera(crop sensor or small sensor DSLR), 600D, 550D, 60D etc...

EF for Full frame sensor camera like 5D(MarkI, II) and 1Ds(Mark I, II)

You can use EF lens on APS-C sensor camera but you cannot use EF-S lenses on 5D and 1Ds series of camera
