Can I do Button braids on a long mane?

Okay, so my horse has a "longish" mane and I really dont want to cut it short, like 4 inches or so as it looks kinda weird in my opinion. So is their any way of doing Button Braids with a long mane? Here is a picture of how long his mane is http://www.horsegroomingsupplies.com/horse-forums/members/love.of.horses-albums-more+photos++my+arab+xd-picture93563-i-lloovvee-this-photo-of-him.html As I said, I would love to leave it longer. And is their any other braids out their for long manes beside the only other two which are running braids and diamond or weave braids? I havent heard or seen of any other braids to do on a horses long mane... I would like to do some button braids but on all the tutorial videos the horses mane is about 4 inches long! I am not braiding for shows, as my horse and me are NOT ready for shows! :D But I like to take him out, and ocasionally instead of training him I like to mess with him, grooming and such. So is their any posibility of braiding button braids with a "longish" mane? Or any other braids to do out their? He is An Arab and I would like to have his mane off his neck to maybe make his neck look thinner or show his curves off (Which sadly to say a Long mane doesnt do that xD)

I have seen a pretty unique way of braiding. I don't know what it's called, but I can explain it to you the best I can.
Okay, so first off, the mane is plaited into small little plaits all the way down the neck. Then you fold it in a way so that the end of the braid is still hanging loose, but there is a fold in the plait. Put a band around the fold. Do the same all the way down.
Then grab the end of the first plait, and band it to the next folded plait down. Do that all the way down so that all of the ends of the plaits are banded to the next fold.
What it SHOULD look like, is a button braid, with a small plait coming out of the button and attached to the next button down.

Its really hard to explain.... But play around with that. It looks really nice when you get the hang of it!

you can try to do button braids but they would just look silly if you want to keep his mane long, and i can see why you would want to. there are alot of other braids you can do, one is a french braid and looks really nice on a horse with a long mane, and depending how tight you make it you can show off that arab neck. i have two thoroughbreds and although i like their manes long i go to 3 day events in the summer and they need the short manes for neatness, braiding, and keeping the mane off their neck keeps them a bit cooler. so button braids would be kinda difficult to make look nice on a horse with a longish mane but hey! who am i to say you cant ttry, give it a go and see what it looks like. good luck!
