other reasons for dog panting besides heat?

my dog will randomly, out of nowhere just start to pant heavily, his tongue will fold, back slightly arched and ears back. This is never associated to heat. We could be hanging out in the evening and all of a sudden he will start this panting. I don't think it's stress because I don't see why he would be stressed, bored maybe, but not stressed. I have heard that heavy panting can be related to heart problems, could this be it? any other ideas?

btw: please don't just tell me to bring my dog to the vet, I am looking for an informative answer and if I can avoid the costs involved in getting tests done left and right by the vet, I would rather get smart feedback first. thank you

my dog is a 3yr old Boston Terrier - and again, this is NOT related to heat, I am quite aware of the body temp on dogs vs humans. This usually happens in the evening time.

The most common reason for panting is to dissipate heat through air exchange. Cardiovascular problems like heart failure and respiratory diseases or obstructions that lead to difficult breathing may cause excessive panting too.
Dogs may pant due to anxiety and fear or even excitement. Reactions to drugs or poisons can lead to panting and in rare cases anemia may lead to rapid breathing.
Your dog's panting my be entirely normal. The only way to tell whether it is something serious like heart disease, is to have your dog examined by a Veterinarian.

I don't think your pup is in heat that doesn't happen *depending on breed* until the dog is about 6 mos sometimes even 8 mos old. You will notice a swelling of the vulva and a pink color to it also her nipples will be swollen. I think your dog may have eaten something that it wasn't suppose to. I would definitely take her to a vet asap

3) Heat; dogs were a fur coat 24/7 - unlike YOU! They do NOT dissipate heat as easily or as efficiently as we do. Dogs can die from over-heating.
