I'm going to Spain for 4 weeks, what is the best way to keep in contact with my family? ?

I have Verizon and a droid 2 with unlimited texting and internet as well as free Verizon to Verizon calls. I am having the hardest time getting the information online. Is anything (calls or texting) covered? We're also staying in a building with no internet so I wont be able to contact family regularly that way either.

I lived in Spain for a year. I left my Verizon phone at home and bought a local pay-as-you-go cell phone. This wouldn't make sense for you, since it's only 4 weeks.

I'd still leave your cell phone at home. It's not worth having it stolen. If you don't have an international plan, you might not even get signal. If you do, you might be charged a bundle for every second the call lasts.

Skype is by far the best option for you. There are three options:

1. Instant messaging. It's free, but doesn't let you see or hear one another.

2. Webcam chat. This is what I did while in Spain. I bought a webcam ($30), and my parents did as well. We would both sign into Skype and turn our webcams on. This service is also free.

3. Phone calls. Skype offers phone calls, as well as a voicemail service. It creates a phone number for your computer, so others can call you there. This costs money, although I've heard it's relatively affordable.

First, I'd call Verizon and see what they say about your current plan. Ask them what would happen if you brought your phone to Spain, and how much it would cost.

After that, I'd still download Skype and use it.

Good luck.

***I just read the part about no internet. In that case, you'll just need to find an internet cafe. You'll pay a small fee to use their computers. You'll probably be able to send an email, but that's about it. I went to Spain for 10 days when I was in high school... All we did was travel, so we never had internet either. I would just stop in internet cafes and send quick emails.

Ummmmm. Internet? Email? Skype or Msn? Facebook?

There are internet cafés all over the country. You are going to be in school? There will be computer lbs?

Or, you could...*gasp* only be in contact with them through snail mail and telephone for emergencies. That's how we did it in the old days! I lived in Spain for a year, and spoke to my parents, twice. Once when my dad had a car accident, and once when there was a national emergency, to tell them I was fine.

You have to contact your phone provider with such questions. If you haven't got internet in your building, you haven't got internet on your phone, have you? What country are you from? Are you sure your "unlimited texting and internet" includes international roaming? Better check, cause they can charge you up the WAZOO if it isn't.

Why do you need to be in "constant contact" anyway? I suggest you leave your phone for the most important emergencies, and LIVE life while you are there.

internet and texting seem the most convenient, but they're not as personal as a phone call
