Picking a lens... Canon vs Tamron?

Question

I have been using a Canon 50D with a kit lens for all my photography for the past 2 years. I am now upgrading. I have been looking at the Canon 24-70 2.8, and then I found the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. There is a large price difference ($1400 for Canon, $500 for Tamron) but I almost have the full amount for the Canon. My question is should I hold off on Canon and just go for the Tamron (I would be able to then purchase a new zoom lens - 70-200 2.8 for $700) or should I get the Canon and wait to upgrade to the Canon 70-200 2.8 when I have another couple thousand?

I have read positive and negative reviews on both... I just can't decide. The weight factor of the Tamron might be nice (it is 1 pound less than the Canon) because I have been experiencing Carpal Tunnel and lifting a camera sometimes hurts....  Any thoughts?

I think I can speak for most of us regulars here when I recommend Canon.

On a personal note I own one Tamron lens and I won't buy another.  It has focus and aberration issues.  Cheaper yes but it's pretty obvious why it's cheaper once you use one.

The canon comes with weather sealing a very high quality build standard and yes.. more weight. For as far the reviews go the auto focus is quiet and quick.

The Tamron is ALLOT cheaper.. it might miss the weather sealing and its materials feel a bit well cheaper. But the glass is good and you probably get almost equal to sometimes better image quality from it. It is really a super lens for its price

In some areas it has beaten lenses that are twice expensive and some pro's do like it. yeah a 3rd brand lens.. non weather sealed non silent focus and not as quick BUT .. it also looks less pro so it is easier for street photography. Really if you walk around with a canon of a lens.. it is obvious. This lens is smaller.. it gets less flack!

In short check these images, if this is what you seek and you can handle the cheaper build quality and the fact that the lens zooms a little bit slower. Really give it a try

I put one on my Sony A200... that is a entry level camera. And the images that come from it are very nice.

Maybe go to a camera store and try it.. if they have both! Really just give a call and ask if you can go to that store and try both lenses. Really you gotta feel it and try it to understand it.

The Tamron is quite special but maybe just maybe you do want the super quality of the Canon. It is your money and your final choice.. both are good choices!

And well the Tamron is a lot lighter so it fits a a person going on vacation also better. Really I don't want to say bad things about L glass... except is very heavy and big and obvious. With the Tamron you have a smaller lighter lens that performs about the same or at times better. And you don't look like a journalist!
