Getting started in Ham radio?

I'm 14, and for years, I've been fascinated with how things work. I've had some electronic experience (soldering skills, tinkering, circuit bending, playing with an Arduino, etc). But recently, I've really been interested in Ham radio. So I did some research, but I was slightly overwhelmed with the details, I couldn't find a website to fully explain and help me get started. How should I get started? Could you explain the basics? Is there an economical method to get started? And can you give me some good websites for a reference in getting started?

Good for you.  Yes one can study on the cheap.  I did not have classes in my area and I had a hard time finding an elmer (teacher) so I used the resources available on the net.

First I downloaded the answer and question pool and studied the questions and correct answers.  I did not bother with the wrong answers.  You can get the Technician pool from here in word, pdf or text.  Don't forget the graphics.;

Second, once I was familiar with the questions I started taking sample tests until I passed them on a regular basis.  It told what area I needed to work on, again choose the Technician test;

Once your proficient at taking the test find a testing site.  Get with a local ham radio club or check the ARRL site to find a testing session;

Once you get your license you can start using a radio.  Get in contact with local clubs before you get your license.  There will probably be several folks that would be glad to help you.  Also don't forget that field day is just around the corner.  Find a local field day event and go check it out.  They may even have a GOTA (get on the air) station that you can use via another hams license.

Don't worry, this will be like drinking from a fire hose at first but it will all become easy with practice.

do a search for the ARRL site and QRZ site and you will find lots of info and practice test. Also look up your local amateur radio club and go to the meeting and im sure you will get any help you need.
