Is it a curse, or bad DNA combo, or can a Mai pull back and just make them sick and not kill them? Only a kiss on the lips kills and not cheek kissing? I missed the very first episode so I'm not sure how this exactly works.
Also does Chloe know she is Mai before she is killed the first time?

Humans and Mai don't mix.
In the first episode, Chloe is eager to have her first kiss.
She does not know she is Mai, so she goes to a club for her birthday.
On her birthday, she meets a guy (he's really cute!) Xavier and kisses him right before she leaves.
They exchange numbers and he does not call for a few days and she wonders why.
We find out that he is dead and that Chloe is Mai.
Alec also tells Chloe that humans and Mai don't mix and it's worse for the human who dies.
Chloe does not know and she starts to cry as she watches the police take his body out of his apartment.
She does not know, but after she meets Alec and Jasmine and they explain everything esp. about the part where Mais kill humans if they share a kiss.
