It's called single elimination where the swedes and the braziians lost. When we lost, it was still the group stages.

the U.S. lost in a group match against Sweden. They won second in group so they went on.

Brazil lost to the U.S. in the elimination stages (quarterfinals). They had to go home.

Sweden lost to Japan in the semifinals. Since Sweden was eliminated, Japan advanced. So, Sweden will now compete in the match for 3rd place.

The U.S. loss didn't really matter much.

Hope this helped:)

Because Japan beat Sweden in the Semi-finals, and we (USA) beat Brazil in the quarter-finals.

there's something called "bracket play" and the "elimination games" i guess you could call it. bracket play determines who will come first, second, third, and fourth in your bracket. based on points and goal differential, Sweden and the US made it out of bracket, even though Sweden beat the US. Brazil got first place in their bracket so they also made it to the next round. those games were "bracket play."

the next round is called "elimination games." this round consists of the quarterfinals, semi finals, and finals. those three games are "single elimination", meaning if you lose, you're out. in one of the quarterfinal games, Brazil played the US. since the US ended up winning that game they moved on to the semi final game, while Brazil was knocked out because it was a single elimination game. Sweden beat Australia in their quarterfinal game, so Sweden moved on to the semi final game while Australia was knocked out of the tournament. in the semi final game, Sweden played Japan (Japan won their quarterfinal game against Germany) and Japan won 3-1. since the semi final is also an elimination game, Sweden was knocked out of the tournament.

so after all of that, the US is playing Japan in the final. i hope all that made sense(: the quarterfinal, semi final, and finals game are "single elimination"...you lose, you're out. that's why Brazil and Sweden are not in the finals.
