The brand makes far less difference than the composition of the wound strings (the unwound strings are, as far as I can tell, the same, except for gauge, across all brands). Bronze strings with 80% copper/20% tin are the brightest, followed by bronze strings with 85% copper/15% tin. Phosphor bronze strings aren't as bright, but stay lively longer.

There are far more brands of strings than there are actual string manufacturers. The vast majority of companies with guitar string brands are simply buying strings from the very few actual manufacturers and packaging them.

For what it's worth, I use light-gauge D'Addario phosphor bronze strings on the guitar that I finger-pick, and medium-gauge D'Addario phosphor bronze strings on the guitar that I flat-pick (with picks ranging in thickness from 0.88 mm to 1.5 mm)....Show more

Is there something about the Martin strings you don't like? I have a Guild D4 dreadnought and I think the Martin SP strings sound great on it for about $5 a set. I recently got 3 sets of D'Addario EXP strings because they were on sale. I've been using them for about 6 months now and just put the last of the 3 sets on my guitar last night. They're a good string too, but I'm pretty sure I'll go back to the Martins. Some people swear by Elixir strings. I've tried them and they're a good string if you want to pay 3x as much. But if you just want good basic strings that sound good there's nothing wrong with a $5 set of Martin SP's in my opinion. Strings are one of those personal preference things though. Try some different ones out and see if you like them. If not, change them to something else in a month or two when you change them again. Once you find some you like, buy them in bulk to save some money (I buy 10 sets of the Martins for around $45 and change them every couple months). FWIW, I always use light strings too....Show more
