in canon 1000D, how to do live view?quick af or live af?
hi i have a canon eos 1000d , id like to use the live view, can you put the dial other than P, i want to use the auto focus feature ...if i use the live view mode, they say there are two choices QUICK AF or LIVE AF which is better? i want convenience of use , as when i travel i could just let anyone shoot a picture of me easily just like a digital Point and Shoot... but id like an autofocus with it i tried some but its not as clear (blurry) as using the viewfinder.. i would like it to act as P&S if i need to especially for those instances...

I have live view on my 450D that is pretty similar to the 1000D. It is crude, clunky, eats the battery and is pretty useless except in extreme circumstances! It is not intuitive so giving it to "anyone" would confuse them. You frame the photo Press the * (star) button until you get the focus beep (during which time the screen blanks) Release the * button Press the shutter to take the photo
It is easier just to tell 'em to look through the viewfinder!
That said, I find the Quick AF more usable than Live AF

Quickest most accurate AF is in normal viewfinder mode.
It's not as if you have a flip out screen for self protraits, know what i mean? If AF speed is important then use the optical viewfinder.
If you must use live view then use the quickmode. Basically this reverts to conventional viewfinder mode for a second, the mirror flips down to let light reach the AF sensor, and so live view is lost momentarily. Then it's back to live view. This is great-ish for static subjects, hopeless for moving subjects.
Live mode is basically contrast detection. Worked fine on compacts with small sensors and greater depths of field that this brings. Crap on DSLRS with their large sensors and attendant increase in depth of field, giving the system more depth to hunt through, thus slowing it right down.
If you want fast live view AF, go back to a compact. DSLRs have only had live view for around 5-6 years. We coped before.
As I understand it you know how to use live view, you only want to know which is best, Quick AF or Live AF. Live AF will try to get it a little better than Quick AF. If you don't like the results, go to manual focus.
But it's not a point and shoot camera it's a dslr. If you're going to use it this way why didn't you just buy another P&S? I own a 1000D and it's an excellent dslr and even though the live view is there this camera is intended for serious photography and using this way you should have bought another P&S.
