My daughter's pet mice passed away a few weeks ago and I've been considering getting her another pet(s). I've read a few articles on Diamond Doves and Doves in general and they seem like a decent choice for a child. I've read that they don't bite but I find that hard to believe especially if they are scared or hurt. Is it true that they don't bite? Also, if you have/had them as pets do you think they would make a good pet for a child? Thanks!

Yes, it is true that pigeons and doves do not bite. The only time they try is when they are nesting and you try to bother them on the nest. But their beaks are not sharp or very strong because they don't crack the seeds they eat like parrots do. They are also not naturally aggressive. So if they do try to bite while on the nest, I promise it doesn't hurt. Mostly just soft pecking.
Diamond Doves do make great pets, as well as other pigeons and doves. Diamond doves are small (about the size of a sparrow) so if your daughter is really young, then small animals may not be too good. But if she understands to be gentle with animals, not to squeeze them too hard when they hold them, or pet them too rough, then she'll be fine! :)
Make sure you get them from a breeder who spends time with their birds. My Diamonds were pretty skittish, but they weren't tamed when they were younger and I got them as adults that were already a few years old (the male was actually 10 when I got him). Ringneck doves are less skittish and easier to tame, in my experiences. But then again, I breed/raise Ringneck doves so mine are pretty tame. Even from other lofts, it doesn't take long being here before they warm up. But it's really the same with all birds/animals - the more you are around them, the more you handle them, the more tame they will get. Especially when you start them at a young age!
