I have a daughter who is 5 and she loves animals. She has had a hamster, a betta fish and 2 mice. She didn't care too much for the mice since she couldn't really play with them but she did her best and took care of them. We have a small dog but the dog is really my pet and she prefers me to anyone else. My husband says no more dogs and he is allergic to cats so those are out of the question. Are there any suggestions for a good pet for a child that would be a bit more interactive but only requires a small cage/aquarium?

Forgot to mention that I'm allergic to Guinea Pigs. We got her one last year and I couldn't breath for a month and a half till we found her a new home.

I had a dwarf rabbit when I was her age. It was a indoor rabbit, litter box trained (took a lot of time to do), but I had a lot of fun with her. I actually use to dress her up, paint her nails, poor Clover all the embarrassing things she endured as a bunny. :)
I actually currently have a ferret, unless your prepared for your home to smell don't get one. I have to clean her sometimes 3 times a day, they need to be out and have exercise like a dog. I love her but I will never get another one.
how about a guinea pig??? they just need a cage that is at least 48'' X30'' and they live in herds of 2 and up! they are great and super interactive. they eat unlimited hay, some veggies, and pellets + water. your daughter can play with it and take it out of its cage. they require less care and don't need to be taken to the vet usually. they like to cuddle in your arm or play around! my piggys use a small animal harness to go to the park. although they can't be litterbox trained , guinea pigs don't smell as long as they are kept in a clean environment. when your daughter gets older like 10 or 11 she should seriously get a bunny! they have a huge personality and are really quiet so she won't get distracted !!!! they are super hyper and love hopping around. rabbits can also get litterbox trained and let free in the house as long as its bunny proof. but for now definitely go for the guinea pigs! check out this web for all the proper care and caging stuff :D http://jackiesguineapiggies.com/piggycare.html
Well I guess frogs are out of the question.... Maybe a rat? I've heard you could train the and stuff. My friend has 2 she carries around in her purse everywhere ( but once one scared some1 in the mall elevator )
I constantly call my rabbit my toddler boy and in basic terms my boy ..I say im his mama too! its in basic terms a demonstration of love on your puppy...its not a foul element..concept dont take care of her or him like a toddler or human beacuse then they are able to alter into over ruleing and sassy!!
