It designates an exponent - how many times a number is multiplied by itself.

2^2 = 2x2 = 4
2^3 = 2x2x2 = 8

And so on. I don't know the word for the actual symbol, although I've heard the button on a calculator called the "carrot key."

It's the symbol used for " raised to the power of "

3^2 = 3 * 3 = 9

^ means raised to the power. 3^2 = 3 * 3 = 9, 2^3 = 2 * 2 *2 = 8

it means to the power of something.

For example, 3^2 would just be 3*3 = 9. It tells you how much you need to multiply the number by.

Hope this helps!

It just means to the power of
x^2 = x squared
x^3 = x cubed
