Teachers are underpaid when compared to other professions that require the same amount of education.

The Washington Post states, "According to a new study from the National Education Association, a teachers union, half of new U.S. teachers are likely to quit within the first five years because of poor working conditions and low salaries."

Underpaid by any measure.
If you compare private sector jobs that require the same amount of education, teachers make less.
(Mrs. A.- those people get all those benefits and the retirement plan, too.)

If you look at the amount of time they put in, including the hours supervising clubs, sports and afterschool activities, grading papers, planning lessons, meeting with students to give extra help, meeting with parents, etc., their hourly rate is pathetic.

If you look at the importance of the work they do-- what is more important to you, your children or your car? Then why does the mechanic get paid more? What is your children's future worth to you?

Teacher are OVERpaid.

Where I lived, they get medical, dental, optical, and life insurance for themselves and their families and a 90% of their top pay in retirement after 20 years. A first year teacher can make $57,200 plus benefits. Most teacher top off at $93,700 a year and more if they become administrators - $120,000-$250,000 a year.

Remember, most teachers work only 9-10 months a year.

Where I lived, the schools were awful; I had to hire tutors to teach my oldest to read, and then I threatened to sue the school when they tried to put off the IEP I had scheduled. I home schooled my youngest and he went to college at age 14. My children saw all the latest films on videos at school including the Leonardo DiCaprio version of Titanic in 6th grade, topless scene and all - in a history class that is supposed to be studying the Crusades. I discovered this when I took my sons to the video store and they told me that they had seen all of the movies AT SCHOOL.

I taught my own children to read, write and do arithmetic. What did I need the overpaid teachers
for?

In the private sector, private school teachers make $30,000-50,000 a year with no benefits. The private school principals makes $50,000-70,000 depending on the school and the community.
