I have to put my hair in buns for dance all the time. I also have thick hair I straighten so that it's straight. What I do is pull my hair back into a ponytail as high as I want the bun and tie the ponytail. Then I take my pointer finger and thumb and wrap that around my ponytail up my the elastic and start to wrap my hair around them. Before it gets all the way around I pull my fingers away and continue wrapping the rest of my hair around what I have already started. Then I either tie it with another elastic, bobby pin it or use these twisty hair pins made by Scunci. I don't remember the name. Idk if they still make it but I also have this thing called a Hairagami I've had forever that help make perfect bun.
Gather all your hair in your hand as in you were going to put your hair in a ponytail, then twist your hair. After you are done twisting your hair, hold the base of the bun/twist (closest to your head/roots), and roll/move the hair around the base counter-clockwise, or clockwise if you're left handed. Secure with a covered rubber band(s) and bobby pins if you want it to hold for a long time.
