Do web page designers make good money? And is it a widespread job?
I hear you can make a decent paycheck if you choose web page design. Does anyone know how much money they make on average? And is it a good job choice in today's economy? Like is it a job that's currently in demand?

Web designers can make good money because the Web has become a must for all types of businesses today.
But there's a lot of competition out there, especially from third world countries who's willing to work cheap. I suggest you don't try to compete with them, but make sure that you deliver the best quality work in a reasonable time frame. And make sure you have a website where potential customers can really say "Wow - I want that person to create my site!"
To see the rates and how much they're making, look at sites such as eLance.com and rentacoder.com -- the rates of web page designers vary
I suggest you think of a niche.
Some web designers simply do the "look" of the site and present it to the client as a PDF. Once the client approves, they then sub-contract the coding to a programmer.
Some web designers focus on static HTML sites, while others work on content management systems such as Wordpress. You can find work by focusing on certain paid themes and offering your services to customize the theme.
Let me just tell you it is a very very competing field and you can find so many web designers around the world. You can earn decent money only is you have something special what others do not have and you leave your mark.
Computer Science or Software Engineering. Software Engineering is a pure programming major, while Computer Science is maybe 2/3 programming and 1/3 hardware. Just beware, Software Engineering takes alot of work and problem solving to obtain.
