Where to stay in Hemel Hempstead, near the train station or somewhere else? We need to book soon!?

My fiance and I will be staying in Hemel Hempstead Sept 4-10 and taking the train to London most days.
Should we try to stay near the train station so "commuting" time is cut down or is there another area (with shops and cafes) that would be better (maybe bus to the train?)?

Stay near the town centre or railway station. Hemel is quite spread out
