Whats Up With My Washer?

OK . . I have a Whirlpool, Ultimate Care II, Quite Wash, Washer. . . .
the agitator's not moving back and forth . . .trying to . . but not doing the job.

I'm a typical guy . . I can turn a wrench and fix things . . Just thought I'd weigh in here first before I went down that path.

Any techs out here who know what part has worn out? or suggestions on how to fix it?
Worth it to order the part? . . or just buy a new one?

Thanks in Advance

Hi Fred, this is Mike with The Home Depot.

I had the same problem with my Whirlpool washer. The agitator shaft and the agitator itself both have spines. The agitator sits on the shaft and its’ spines interlock with those on the shaft.

Over time the spines on the agitator wear down, as the agitator is made of plastic.
Eventually, the spines wear out and the agitator loses its’ connection with the shaft and stops working.

Remove the agitator and inspect the spines, I think you will find they are worn out. The solution is a new agitator.

As far as repair vs. replace, it all depends on the age of your washer. If it’s over five years old, I would replace it. I ended up replacing my washer 6 months after I replaced the agitator.

If you decide to repair your machine, go to www.appliancerepair,net for a complete troubleshooting and repair guide for your washer.

I hope this info helps solve your problem.
