What does subscription mean?

I'm kind of new to YouTube and I have some subscribers and I have no idea what that means. Can someone please tell me what it means and how it works. I looked up the word at dictionary.com and it only talked about money. Do I have to pay these people or what?

if they subscribe to you all it means is they get notified by youtube when you make a new video.  you can also subscribe to people with a channel as well.  you can do that on their channel page or on any of their videos.
