What are the pros and cons of buying an Apple ipad? Please help!?

I am a 20 year old college student and was thinking about buying the Apple ipad. I already own a laptop, but its not very travel friendly and would like something I can take on the go with me wherever I go. I wanna be able to check my email, search the internet, type papers as well as do other fun and entertaining stuff while I am not at home.

So is it worth getting an ipad. Can I type papers on the ipad and then print them out? How does that work? What about USB drives and Flashdrives etc? Does the ipad allow for that? I ask because I have never owned a mac book before and was told the ipad is VERY similar to an apple mac book. Can anyone give me the run down on the pros and cons of an ipad and if its worth it?

I'm also an aspiring writer, like to read as well as LOVE to play games. So i don't know if that will help.

An ipad will be good for general internet surfing and checking emails. I will not recommend writing papers on an ipad because the keyboard is touch key and can become irritating from time to time, laptops are better for typing long paper. In terms of printing, some newer models can print from an ipad but you can download apps for printing. In some cases ipad is similar to a macbook but not all the time. I would recommend you a macbook air instead. You can use ipad for general use in terms of internet surfing or checking your email but paper writing is laptop.

EDIT: battery life on ipad is 10 hours, but some hard usage I get around 6.5-7 hrs.
